Why I’m voting for David Carrier

Posted in Why I'm voting for David Carrier at 10:22 am by Administrator

Fellow Voters,

My name is Cozette Tyler, and I am a single mother of four children. I am also a college student studying Political Science at Clark College in Vancouver Washington. I am happy to have this chance to share a bit about myself, and why I fully support David Carrier as our next State Senator.

David Carrier stands for our most important issues on both a state and global level. As a single mother, it is more than critical to me that my family have a fair shake; that someone is balancing the scales by promoting causes that really matter in my house hold such as better education, affordable housing and health care, as well as fixing our worlds changing climate.

These are very important issues within my home as I am sure they are within many American homes. I am aware that our country is in a state of economic uncertainty, and that alone is enough to shake the walls of the American family structure.

As a college student, I want to see jobs available for both myself and my children. I want to know that there will still be a home called earth for my grandchildren. I want to elect a candidate that will work hard to ensure a healthier environment for families of today and tomorrow.

As a parent, I want to be able to prove by example that hard work can and still does pay off. I want to offer my children a legacy that will exemplify the idea that they can rise above any hardship and strive for a better life.

The only way that I know to do this is to cast my vote for candidates like David Carrier, who understand just how vital a role the Democratic Party plays in the lives of our nation’s citizens, and who will openly work for change that benefits everyone.

I hope you’ll join me in voting for David!

Sincerely
Cozette Tyler
Voter, 17th Legislative District

David Carrier came by our house tonight to introduce himself as the 17th District Candidate for State Senator. We were immensely impressed with him as a person and his views. He is not extreme yet solidly represents the working people.

We have a disabled daughter, who is 28 and still living at home. I sensed a sincere commitment to families like ours who are struggling to maneuver the social services system. David Carrier is the first politician, in a very long time who has given us hope.

I heard Doctor David Carrier talk of the way things should be. He has ethics and common sense. I’m surprised to find these two qualities in a person running for state senator. He does not seem to spout what we want to hear, but truth of what we have to hear. I am voting for David because I believe he has a vision of the way things should be for our children and their children. He will work toward bringing a better quality of life to our state. Thanks, Dr Carrier, for caring enough to run and having the courage not to quit.

Why I am voting for David Carrier:
As a Professor of Economics at Washington State University, David presents the 17th Legislative District a fine opportunity for a well-rounded, thoughtful, and well educated professional to represent our district.

As a healthcare professional, I recognize and value the need for legislation that would address low-cost health care options to all Washington residents such as proposed in the Health Insurance Partnership

In addition, I support the Principles set forth by the Healthy Washington Coalition. The Principles are as follows: (www.healthywacoalition.org)
    1. Ensure secure, high quality and affordable health care to all Washingtonians.
    2. Ensure choice of provider and quality affordable health plans.
    3. Promote an affordable sliding scale for health care costs to ensure personal responsibility by all adult Washingtonians.
    4. Share the cost for the health system and the responsibility for making the system work between individuals, employers and government.
    5. Care should be affordable for individuals and employers, including small businesses, and changes to the system should benefit those employers who provide quality affordable health care for their employees.
    6. Encourage personal healthful behavior by providing incentives and health education.
    7. Require that Government be a watchdog ensuring the health system is working and fair for individuals, employers, and providers; that health care remains affordable; and that there are high quality affordable health plans available.

I strongly believe that by supporting David Carrier in his campaign to represent the 17th District, WA residents can be assured that the recommendations from this coalition will be taken seriously.

The Washington Health Care Caucus is meeting in Vancouver on Tuesday, September 23, 2008; 6-30-8:30 at Clark PUD Community Room. The public is invited.

We wanted to thank you for taking the time to stop by our house and introduce yourself. It’s been a long time since anybody campaigning for office made an effort to ask for our support. Since we are new to the area, we have not determined who will get our vote, but your visit causes us to lean heavily in your favor and sets us on a path we’ve never before trod: a contribution! Please accept this with our heartfelt wishes for your success and the knowledge that, since your approach worked for us who are old cynics about politics in general and state politics in particular, it will surely work for others as well.

I’m pasting in the contents of an e-mail I sent to Dr. Carrier last night after having the pleasure of conversing him while he was walking through our neighborhood meeting voters:

    Dear Dr. Carrier,
It was a pleasure to meet you tonight on your walk-and-knock canvassing of the Mountain View Village neighborhood. I was the fellow in the t-shirt with rice sticking to it (just finished making sushi for my daughters) who teaches in Washougal.
I wanted to send you a note of encouragement to tell you how much I appreciate your effort in really getting out to get to know the voters. As a teacher of US History, I constantly strive to model out examples to my students (as well as to my children) of what it means to be involved in the wonderful blessing of being able to choose our leaders. Your visit sparked a good conversation with my daughters (and later with my wife chiming in as well) about the importance of being directly involved in the democratic process. Most political leaders (of both parties) subscribe to the notion of paying someone to set up a machine to call all the homes in their district, asking for support. We generally hang up on these (even, and maybe even especially, for those whom we support). It was a breath of fresh air to see you, flyers in hand, hoofing it through our neighborhood. That, in my estimation, says volumes about your commitment not just to getting elected, but to putting your money (or the soles of your running shoes, as it may be), where your mouth is.
I generally vote Republican, but after reading through your positions on your website, I am proud to say I’d like to give you my full support. (Your comments about supporting teachers sure didn’t hurt, either). Again, thank you for taking the time to come by. I’m sure in this busy election season, it would have been far easier to go the route of the automated phone call or whatever, but the personal touch really connected with me. Keep it up, and best of luck in the campaign!

PS I’d be glad to support your campaign with a yard sign, if you have them available. (Naturally, if one requires a campaign donation, that’s fine – I’ll browse a bit further on your website to see what I need to do to get one). I just hope you don’t mind having your sign next to a McCain/Palin one!!!! :o )

I am supporting David Carrier because he is about the most environmentally friendly candidate around. He gets the issue of global warming. I have been working on behalf of the environment for 40 years. It would be a treat to have someone truly representing me in the legislature. He would make a great partner to Senator Craig Pridemore in the senate. Together the two of them would work hard on the behalf of wildlife and of people. He is hard working and diligent. He will make wise decisions while in the legislature.

I look around my neighborhood and I see vacant homes. There are For Sale signs everywhere. I see people staying home during the day who used to go to work.. Whatever Don Benton has done for the community as a whole, has obviously not been enough, or has quit being effective. After his 14 years in office I am of the opinion he has had a fair chance, but it has not been enough, or he failed to pay attention to economic events as they overtook us. At this juncture the only reasonable recourse is to move on, and to endorse new energy, new ideas, new century reasoning. That would be David Carrier. He radiates practical, comprehensive, and solid ideas, that not only encompass one or even two segments of the needs requiring attention, but sees us as a whole viable community. We need help, yes. We need answers, yes. And we need sound ideas. We can help ourselves, we’re used to hard work, but we need engaged leadership to a help build a solid and secure future. But mostly we need someone who listens to those needs, and someone who can work toward providing the necessary tools so that we can bring back energy to our streets, neighborhoods, and communities.

I support David Carrier because David cares about a healthy SW Washington. The incumbent has consistently voted against improving climate problems confronting Washington state. David will fight to protect health of our children. David’s economics training will insure that the citizens get the most bang for their buck.

My great grandmother settled here on her own, claiming in letters to her family that she had found a true Eden. I was born and raised in Battle Ground, where I became active in advocating for educational programs and environmental protections when I was still a kid. Back then Battle Ground was still a small town, and my views were often out of the mainstream, but I was always encouraged to have those views and to work for what I believed in. I was always supported by somebody in my efforts– teachers, parents, coaches– until years later when I ran up against one glaring exception.

In my more than 20 years of citizen activism, no one has treated me with as much disregard and arrogance as our current State Senator, Don Benton. I was in Olympia to speak to an education committee in support of Running Start (a state program that serves students AND saves the state money), I was dismissed by Benton, without apology or explanation. Even though I was there that day at the invitation of Republican Don Carlson, and I was with the President of Clark College.

I wasn’t completely surprised– Benton has earned his reputation for arrogance- but I was deeply discouraged. Benton was rumored to be ineffective even within his own party, and on that trip I came to believe that even if he had taken the time to listen to his constituents, he likely would not have been able to advocate on our behalf. As a Senator, he could have been one of our biggest allies, but it seemed he was too alienated to be of any help at all.

So, here I am, more than 8 years later, and now mother to two little boys. You can imagine, my commitment to education and the environment is magnified, but if I have reason to talk to a legislator, I just work around Benton. I make no effort to contact him.

You can imagine, I was excited to learn from friends that a new candidate, David Carrier, for State Senate actually had a chance at unseating the long time incumbent Benton. A little research later, and I was over the moon to find that Carrier is a man whose extraordinary education and lifetime commitment to service would make him a dream candidate any year.

Now, add to that the ways that Carrier is the perfect candidate to serve us at this critical moment. For instance, we’re in the thick of a horrible financial crisis, and Carrier is an economist. One key to working our way toward a healthier economy is to create a “green economy,” and Carrier has experience and vision for this. A quick read of his bio reveals that this is a man who has committed his life to service, meeting high standards of achievement, and living with integrity.

I couldn’t be more pleased to see a candidate of David Carrier’s caliber stepping up to give Clark County citizens the kind of representation in that Senate seat that we deserve. Please, urge your friends and family to learn about David Carrier, and let his achievements and positions earn their vote.

    Sincerely,

    Kerri Altom
